It's that time again - Fall Sports are in full swing in my house.  Not only are there three sets of smelly football pads and helmets in the garage, but there is a never ending stream of football on the TV.  While I am not about to post about the sport of football, I am thinking about the job of feeding all of these little to big athletes who are working all day at school and then head straight to practice and come home starving for dinner.  It is a constant conumdrum for all of us trying to feed our children for their best performances whether in a sport or not.   It also makes me a bit more conscience of what I pack for lunch so that my "lunch taking" son will actually have something healthy that he will eat and will do him some good.

As SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL CHILD OBESITY AWARENESS month I thought it would be timely to focus a bit on easy,  packable, nutritious lunches and after school snacks.  (This isn't just for the kiddos either!  We all could do with brown bagging now and again!)  Currently, 1 in 3 American children are overweight or obese.  That is a staggering number to me.  That would mean one of my three children, to put it in perspective.  Those overweight children are at risk for serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease at an early age.  Also, obese children are 80% more likely to  become obese adults and have even more health risks.

I believe one of the best things we can do for our children is feed them from home.  That way you know what they are eating and from where it came!  YOU can control the amount of sugar and pre-packaged and processed foods they are eating.  Packing a good lunch is not nearly as daunting as it sounds.  To prove this point I am setting out a list here of LOTS of great ideas!  Personally, my lunch packer usually gets leftovers.  That way I know he is getting a lean protein and then a side of a fruit, like a clementine, and veggie, like carrot sticks.  We fill a huge water bottle and stick it in the fridge the night before so it stays cold.  He helps with the process so he has a say in his eats and is happy.

If your ideas are getting stale, here are some ideas you might like to try:

Tuna/Chicken Salad and Crackers
Fruit and Yogart
Homemade Trail Mix
Quesadillas
Apples/celery and peanut butter
Cheese and crackers
Tacos
Pasta
Pizza Roll ups
Hard Boiled Eggs (great idea but mine won't touch it!)
Sweet Potato
Nut butter and jelly sandwhich (I read a great idea to switch up        the nut butters so your child doesn't get tired of the same ole' PBJ sandwich)
California Rolls
Soup
Nuts
Rice and beans
Burger
Egg Sandwich
Salad
Fruit Salad
Hummus and crackers or veggies
Cottage Cheese and Fruit
Ham and Cheese roll ups
Baked Chips
Whole Wheat English muffin pizzas
Rotisserie Chicken
Protein Smoothie
Oatmeal
LEFTOVERS

See, there are plenty of healthy options for LUNCH or AFTER SCHOOL/PRE-PRACTICE OR GAME SNACKS.  The only bad thing is it does take a little time and preparation.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, in conjunction with CHILDHOOD OBESITY MONTH, Saucony has released a FREE app called Run4Good.  It's an easy download and track your mileage, pace, route, calorie count and more!  PLUS, every step helps fight childhood obesity!  Saucony will double its contribution to charities based on runners meeting monthly mileage challenges.  This looks pretty painless . . . check it out!

I hope you are off to a great week!  I hope I'm ready for more football!  Let me know your go to packable lunch ideas or snack ideas!

By the way, Saucony in no way compensated me for this post or information.  They have NO idea who in the world I am!

Recently, in one of my classes I asked the participants if they had seen a local billboard sponsored by the Storng4Life Campaign.  My boys and I pass by the billboard everyday on the way home from school.  They were the first to notice it and they were APPALLED.  I polled the class participants, and while the message is definately strong and clear, I am not quite sure it can help fix the problem.

I was surprised to find that one of the fitness blogs I often check out discussed the very same billboard.  Sarahfit.com had the following posted:

Have you heard about the new Strong4Life.com campaign against Childhood Obesity? I haven’t formed my own opinion yet since I just heard about it this morning but my initial reaction is:

-Those poor poor kids in the ads. Can you imagine the bullying they are going to endure at school?

-Is this really how you want to combat childhood obesity?

-Much of childhood obesity starts with the decisions of the parents, school, family income, this doesn’t seem like it’s helping solve any of these except making larger children feel bad about themselves.

If you live near me you pass by one of these right near the Steak and Shake - that might be a bit ironic, you think?  You may see them anywhere as this campaign is not just a Georgia campaign.  The billboards definatley make you look are definatley a slap.  I'm guessing that was the intent.  I'm just not sure that slap will help the problem.  Isn't it education?  I know I don't have the answers and this is a problem with many issues that needs answers - SOON.

I also know that Strong4life is a great organization with a wonderful philosophy.  They have other great photos on their website showing kids being active, having fun and participating in healthy habits.  I am in NO way downplaying the organization or their purpose.  Obviously, there need to be more folks out there getting involved and tackling the health risks occurring and that will occur in the future if obesity continues to rise in our nation.
